From supporting food technology students in developing countries to celebrating the discovery of sucralose 40 years ago, here are six extraordinary achievements from across Tate & Lyle’s business in 2016.
 
 
We celebrated removing 77 trillion calories from consumers’ diets globally
 
Since Tate & Lyle discovered sucralose 40 years ago, the amount of SPLENDA® Sucralose produced by Tate & Lyle has been enough to replace over 19 million tonnes of sugar in the human diet. That is the equivalent of removing 77 trillion calories from consumers’ diets globally.

SPLENDA® Sucralose, the Tate & Lyle brand name for sucralose, is a versatile no-calorie, high quality sweetener which is approximately 600 times sweeter than sugar. SPLENDA® Sucralose has had particular success in ice cream, beverages, confectionery, sports drinks and pharmaceutical products.

We helped set a record at one of the largest US single-day ‘Food Drives’
 
Tate & Lyle and its employees joined forces with other partners from across the Decatur, Illinois (US) community to help local radio station WSOY’s Community Food Drive hit a new donation record.

We celebrated the opening of our new oat ingredients production capacity in Sweden
 
Tate & Lyle celebrated the formal opening of its new capacity at its oat ingredients plant in Kimstad, Sweden – part of a £100 million investment in additional capacity for Speciality Food Ingredients.  Capacity at the Kimstad facility has now increased more than tenfold since it was acquired by Tate & Lyle in 2013.

Tate & Lyle uses a unique patented manufacturing process at the facility, transforming locally produced Swedish oats into ingredients that form part of our speciality food ingredients range. PromOat® Beta Glucan and PrOatein® Oat Protein can be used in a variety of food and beverage products including breakfast cereals, smoothies, baked goods, bars and sports shakes, while Avenacare® Oat Beta Glucan is specially formulated for use in personal care products.

We sponsored a ‘Developing Solutions for Developing Countries’ competition
 
Tate & Lyle was the sponsor of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Student Association ‘Developing Solutions for Developing Countries’ competition. 
 
The competition, one of the largest food competitions hosted by IFT, promotes the application of food science and technology, and the development of new products and processes, to improve the quality of life for people in developing countries.

This year’s students were challenged to develop desirable products aimed at increasing a pregnant woman’s intake of calcium in the Middle East and North Africa.  To find out who the winners were click here.
 
We delivered extraordinary eating experiences at trade shows across the world
 
Tate & Lyle served up extraordinary eating experiences at trade shows across the world including a food-truck-inspired  spread at the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in the US, and, at Food Ingredients South America, a menu of popular foods such as reduced calorie chocolate milk and cookies, using a range of specialty ingredients to maintain great taste, while boosting nutritional benefits, enriching fibre content, and reducing sugar and calories.
 
We were recognised for outstanding energy efficiency performance
 
Tate & Lyle’s Lafayette South corn wet mill in Indiana, US, was awarded the Energy Star Certification for its outstanding energy efficiency performance in 2016.  This is the second year running that Lafayette South has been recognized having also received the certification in 2015. The Star, awarded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is an annual certification that celebrates environmental awareness and energy efficient methods in buildings and plants across the US.

Since 2008, Tate & Lyle has reduced energy use per tonne of production at our plants by 5%, and CO2e emissions per tonne of production by more than 10%.
